Why Choose an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach?

Recovery from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and other specified feeding or eating disorders is a courageous journey to go on. In my recovery from anorexia, purging-type, I had an amazing treatment team, including my therapists, psychiatrist, nutritionist, medical doctor and support groups. This team gave me invaluable support.

However, I often thought that something was missing in my recovery from anorexia. I often wished I had a “sponsor” to help with the concrete day-to-day struggles that hindered my progress. I am also in the 12-step program for Alcoholics Anonymous and I had a sponsor there. Why didn’t the eating disorder community have these supports put in place?

I struggled at times to follow my meal plan, dine out at restaurants, sit with my urge to purge, sit with my urge to restrict, food shop and clothes shop without falling apart. I often wanted a buddy to go to the gym with me to role model healthy exercise. I often wanted someone to sit with me at night (my most difficult time) to distract me from my powerful urges to purge. It took years on my own, but I was able to recover and get my life back.

This brings me to Carolyn Costin’s Eating Disorder Recovery Coach Certification. It is a 12-module online course, including supervision, which she offers on the Carolyn Costin Institute. The role of the eating disorder coach is to focus on the here-and-now. A coach helps someone in recovery integrate back into their lives. An eating disorder coach is an addition to the overall support team. A coach does not dive into the person’s psychological background but helps to implement everyday recovery:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Recipes
  • Clothes shopping
  • Meal preparation
  • Meal support
  • Family events support
  • Live-in with the client
  • Talk or tele-therapy sessions

Full recovery is possible!
