Your recovery environment is essential to recovery. In my last blog I wrote about a recent lapse with restriction. I spoke about action steps I took to get back on track, including reaching out to my support system and using exposure therapy to increase my food intake. One of the obstacles to my recovery was staring me blatantly in my face- yes the scale. During a bad break-up two years ago I had purchased one to help feel more in control. At first it just sat there taking up space. I weighed myself sporadically without any emotional reactions. However when I fell into a vulnerable situation the scale yelled at me to step on it. I started weighing myself daily and my worth was being measured by a number. I have had love-affairs and hate-affairs with scales throughout my recovery and I knew for me to continue with recovery it had to go. On February 17, 2019 I threw out my scale! I don’t care if you recycle your scale, smash it up into little pieces, donate it or toss it out your window. To recover is to resolve to stop trying to change your body, but instead to love it, nurture it and accept it. Start to measure your life with meaning; with love; with connection. We can recover. Serenity Always, Meredith
